‘ you have a habit of being temperamental, sister. i couldn’t be quite sure that you weren’t lumping me with father in your hatred of him. ‘

she didn’t enjoy fighting the other as well. in some part because she would often lose. but more so than that, it didn’t feel quite right. she had no latent animosity towards her sister, nor to the rest of her family. ( even if sometimes they deserved it. if lucifer had been put in her position, the agni kai would have actually been a fight, michael suspects. )

her father took pride in lucifer being a conquest from the water tribes. a waterbender turned to the fire nation. unfortunately, michael’s sister was somewhat capricious, and didn’t seem to want to fit that role entirely.

michael had to admit, however, that she would greatly appreciate her sister’s company, especially after being banished. it would be good to be with the comfort of someone familiar, even if their relationship was sometimes complicated at best.

she bowed slightly, tipping her head forward.

‘ though i don’t think we’ll ever agree on that, i’m glad to have you with me. ‘

she touches her scar almost absently, still raw, still healing, and doesn’t voice the quiet validation that comes from her beloved sister saying that that action of father’s was wrong. it may just be out of spite to him, but it was still greatly appreciated.

image

temperamental? ME?   remarkably enough, there wasn’t a hint of sarcasm in those questions. she truly was shocked by the accusations.   i do believe you’re confusing me with someone else, mik. father, perhaps?

she ignored the notion that she could ever hate her ( adopted ) sister, going instead for the snide remark against their father. she wasn’t wrong. that nasty, still healing scar around michael’s eye was proof enough of their father’s WRATHFUL temper.

how he had ever expected michael to actually fight was beyond her comprehension. mik had always been eager to please — eager to serve. fighting had never been in her nature. certainly not with the one she always seemed to respect the most.

               UNLIKE LUCIFER.

despite her near constant insubordinance, lucifer had somehow always remained the favorite of the family. she played the fine line between disrespect and disobedience like a fiddle and somehow always came out on TOP, but the one time mik stepped out of line and had the balls to apologize later she was cast out and BRANDED?

               it was BAFFLING. infuriating.

it was also a damn miracle that their father hadn’t seen through her ruse. approaching him for the go-ahead, lucifer felt like she’d only just barely managed to conceal the anger boiling beneath her skin.

you will. one day.   her smile was self-assured and, after a moment looking around to make sure the coast was still clear, she leaned forward, returning the slight bow offered to her with a delicate kiss pressed to the scar tissue around mik’s eye.   i’ll have uncle show me to my quarters. you take care of that eye. apply the ointment. PLEASE.

‘ i don’t wish to fight you, sister. ‘

( she had learned well enough about fighting family, in the failed agni kai with her father - who she had never wanted to fight. she respected her father’s word, and had knelt and refused to fight; which she paid well enough for. )

beyond that - water was the counteract of fire, and they were meeting now, at night. her sister was naturally gifted, and the advantages were tilted far in her favor. ( michael was a good firebender, yes, but only through practice and beating out rhythms and patterns over and over. lucifer had succeeded even without a waterbending teacher. )

‘ besides, even if we have different intentions, we have the same goal. wouldn’t it make sense to work together? i have a ship, at least. ‘

it wasn’t a very large one, nor was it well-armed, but it was sturdy at least, and having lucifer’s talents on the water would not be a trifling matter.

if it’s a fight you think i’m looking for then you don’t know me half as well as you should.

she’d never been a fan of fighting with michael. not outside of the playful tease-fighting that children ( and siblings ) always did. it felt wrong. forced. too much like a role being forced on her and not enough like her own decision.

that it was their father essentially trying to drive a wedge between them with this ridiculous banishment and quest, well…that was just the nail in the coffin as far as she was concerned. she wasn’t here to duel. she was here to HELP. her sister wouldn’t be getting anywhere on the limited resources that she had without a huge stroke of luck, and if her life so far was anything to go by? yeah, that wouldn’t be happening.

you misunderstand my intentions, mik. i have NO plans to interfere with your search.  she was already convinced, despite the bullshit story she’d given to dear old dad that said otherwise. now she just needed to convince michael and make sure she kept her damned loyal trap shut about the real reasons behind this.

father was WRONG, mik. i’m here to make sure that you prove that to him. well, to everyone, really.
